I know there have been a lot of threads on this issue, which has helped me treat the symptom but not cure the disease.
Last Saturday, my wife and I went into the store. The car (1991 940T) had been acting fine. When we got back in the car, there was a small amount of smoke inside. Upon inserting the key, dind, ding, ding commenced, and has continued as long as my key is in the ignition.
In addition to this, fuse #5 is blown and instantly blows when you try to replace it, rendering the clock, dome light, radio, etc. inoperable.
After reading the posts on here, I tried various things to no avail. At that point, I pulled all the bulbs from the door jam warning lights. The dinging stopped!
Unfortunately though, it is still blowing fuse #5.
I am pretty good at fixing most things, but electrical isn't really my bag.
If, by pulling the bulbs, the ringing stopped, I would think it's safe to assume one of those fixtures has a short. But with the smoke I saw, would it be more likely for the short to be near the fixture, requiring pulling the door panels, or would it more likely be in the fuse panel itself? Unfortunately, it was too late to see where the smoke was coming from.
Upon pulling the bulbs, there was no visible sign of smoking or burning on the fixtures. The bulbs all appeared to be fine.
So anyway, thanks to everyone who has posted on here about this subject, as your postings made it possible for the dinging to stop and me to regain some sanity. But if you have any advice regarding how to diagnose the problem and fix fuse #5, I'd really appreciate it.
