I have discovered a good way to renew the surface of the faded bumper covers on
my 740 and you can do the same for about 15 dollars!
Heres what you need:
1. A package of assorted grades of plain steel wool. ( grades 0, 00, and 000 )
2. A bucket of warm, soapy water
3. A bottle of Vinylex
4. About an hour of free time.
Start with the 0 grade in the soapy water and get out all the oil that it comes covered in.
Once the pad is good and soapy, scrub the bumper cover with the most random combination of stokes you can. covering its entire surface with lots of energetic scrubbing. Dont worry about removing too much material, there's no danger of that, just move around. Those nooks and corners will take time, but they make the job look perfect, so get em good.
The pad will have to be rinsed regularly to remove the oxidized plastic, or it will "load up" and become ineffective.
The surface will begin to bead water where the new plastic has been revealed.
Rinse thoroughly and towel dry. Touch up where you missed, It will be obvious.
If you see swirls or abrasion marks from the 0 grade, and you might, repeat the process with the 00 grade which is finer.( perfectionists can do it again with 000 ) When you're satisfied, put the steel wool away.
When there is NO water present to dilute the Vinylex, Apply it.
Now that layer of oxidized, chalky plastic won't reappear and they will STAY black!
Mine are still black after a week. They used to gray up after a day!
