170,000 Service - Necessary? 900

Guys-
My 93 940T has just hit the 170,000 mile mark, hence it is due for the 170,000 mile service. I am not a do-it-yourselfer like some of you (and I envy all of you who do that kind of work), thus it is going to visit the dealer who has been serving our family since 1993. The 170K job is $250, and my father told me I'm a "damn fool" for spending that kind of money to service my car. His issue isn't with what the cost is, but for me spending it. He said just get an oil change and "forget it," and to just have the dealer "check things" instead of forking out the dough. This is the highest mileage Volvo I've ever owned, and I want to keep it running for a long time. For those of you who have your car serviced by someone else, isn't it necessary for the dealer to perform the major services at every 10K? Thanks for the advice. -Scott in STL
