740 no start 700 1992

I'm trying to figure out this no start. I do not own this car...yet...I checked for spark at the coil ...Good...I also listened for the fuel pumps coming on with the key...No noise at all..I have heard about jumping the main fuel pump relay to see if the pump turns on...If it does..Can I drive the car 10 miles home however sluggish? Or will it damage the pump sooner? I did find the insulation to the rpm sensor broken up...But shouldn't I hear the pumps come on with the key anyway?. The car has 207K on it...Thanks to all in advance for any help..
