spring type vs non-spring type lower ball joint 200 1980

my chilton's differentiates between the two kinds of lower ball joints and on inspection it appears that my '80 245 has the cap looking bottom on the ball joint indicating the spring type. parts stores do not offer these. is it necessary to replace w/ the same? and reading forum archives i think i've read that the strut/coil spring does NOT have to be removed to do this job, as chilton's outlines --- so, can i just remove the four bolts and the 3 bolts and swap out the ball joint ? thank you kindly, stcroix
