Engine cut out at 1800 RPM 700 1985

My 1985 740 GLE, (non-turbo, B23F engine, manual transmission w/OD) with 240K miles has developed a loss of power at about 1800~2600 RPM. I have read through the 700/900 and RWD FAQ's and cannot find a situation quite like mine. It feels like a cylinder drops out. If you do not let off the accelerator, it will eventually pick back up and run OK until you let the RPM's drop into the 1800~2600 range. Then the cut out will pick back up. The tach works throughout, no loss of electricity. The car cranks and idles fine.

I replaced the main fuel pump and filter 18 months back. I replaced the in-tank pump and thoroughly cleaned the pump sock last week. I took the Idle Air Valve off and cleaned it today, no change. I cleaned and serviced both the AMM and the the throttle bottle about 2 months ago. I had a reman distributor installed two years ago. All the vacuum hoses appear to airtight and on OK. The only thing I can think of now is the plug wires.

It is the wife's car and she is now scared to drive it. Anyone have an idea before I give in and take to my mechanic?
