Exhaust leak, Turbo to header 700 1988

I had the exhaust man and turbo out of my 88 740T to replace a blown exhaust/head gasket. I don't seem to be able to seal the conical flange on the turbo outlet to header pipe. I played with it for a long time this afternonn, and no joy. Is there a trick to getting this seal right? Tomorrow, or the next time I get to it again, I will disconnect the header pipe from the cat, and see if that works better, but I thought I would ask the list if there is anything else. Both surfaces are in good condition.
TIA
JD
