Detonation damage to pistons?? 700 1989

Just scarfed up an 89 740 non-turbo from a friend who was going to junk "Violet". I paid $300 for her. I thought the head was damaged (and I have a spare head stored away, just as any good Brickboarder has...in my office,of course). Now my mechanic instructor buddy says the problem is detonation damage to the rings and pistons. Is this a fatal blow to the block? should I try to rebuild this B230 or get a junkyard one?
I have a set of standard rings, lower end gasket set, head gasket set, etc for an engine rebuild stored away. Is this a good time to use these?
Any advice appreciated.
Gracias,
el raidman.
