Transmission Problem 900 1996

1996 960 Sedan with 150,000 miles


Evidently I have transmission problems. The W and E on the gear shift gets stuck in the W Mode when it is first started occasionlly. The lights flash between W and E and the arrow light is on the dash. The PNP switch has been replaced and it has not helped the problem. If the ignition is cut off and started again it is OK so far. Several mechanics have looked at it. A Volvo mechanic put his computer on it while it was still in this mode. It showed the S 2 Solenoid. If it is out of the W mode it shows no code by others. The Volvo mechanic says the transmission will have to be rebuilt. Another mechanic that works on foreign cars and Volvos says that Solenoids can be replaced.

Who is correct? Do you spend that much money on an older high mileage car?
