Replacement air box thermostat different length actuator than stock 700 1990

I want to put on the pre-heat hose and so to prevent frying the AMM I am changing the air-box thermostat.

The new thermomstat looks different from the stock one. They look identical except the little metal rod contacting the spring in the air box flapper is different length. Is that actually not true, but the stock one's rod is retracted some (an indication it's bad)?

Thanks for any hints,
Nathan
