Intermittent engine knock/ping in 85' 240DL 200

This might be a tough one,

#1 car has new plugs(gap set to factory specs),wires, cap and rotor.

#2 fuel pumps were replaced 2 years ago, and fuel filter has been checked in last few months

#3 engine will knock on all but premium unleaded 93 octane, and sometimes ok on 91, anything less and engine will knock

#4 most of the time motor runs strong and smooth and then sometimes this happens but usualy not lasting for long, and this happens regardless of if engine under load going up hill or not

could this be caused by a lean mixture from bad O2 sensor?

any suggestions?
