Stalling '87 740 GLE Wagon, HELP!!! 700

HELP!!!! I have an '87 740GLE Wagon with 305K miles that is giving me some problems. It has always had a problem on initial start up. It stalls after running for a few seconds, hot or cold, then after restart it works fine. In addition to that it now has this serious power lag consistently after starting from a stop and going up hill. With the pedal to the floor it can barely get out of it's own way. On the highway it will run 90 mph without any problem. It is now also stalling out at stops and takes two or three attempts on start up. About 1-1/2 years ago I replaced the fuel pump in the tank and just recently replaced the main pump under the drivers seat after it quit. I have recently replaced plug wires, plugs and removed and cleaned throttle body and flame trap. All indications are that the problem is the fuel pump in the tank. I have never been able to hear the pump in the tank running as the diagnostics say you should be able to. Is there a sure fire test for the pump in the tank without replacing it again? Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks!
