smoother idle when o2 sensor unplugged! 200

hey there brickers!
you guys always help me out, so here's a new one for you:
my idle is slightly rough, it sounds like it's stumbling just a touch every second or two. so i was poking around under the hood looking for vacuum leaks (i didn't find any), and i unplugged the o2 sensor to check the voltage on it (which seems a tad out of range, but just barely.)
when i unplugged it, the engine immediately began to idle much more smoothly. it's a one wire universal bosch sensor i spliced in. when i reattached the lead, it began to stumble again.
why would it run more smoothly with no signal from the o2 sensor? should i try another? i've cleaned my throttle body, checked for vacuum leaks, all the stuff i'm supposed to do according to the 700/900 FAQ.
tomorrow i'm gonna clean the iac and see if that helps out at all.
thanks for your input to make olga a better car!
jonathan
