running on 2 1/2 cylinders 200

hey there:
83 or 84 b230 i think (replacement engine).
drove like butter on the way home from work. after stopping to get my wife flowers for her birthday, runs like crud. feels like it's firing on 3 cylinders. i started pulling plug wires to see if i could find a lack of spark. when i pulled numero 3 it started running smoother. limped home like that.
it almost stalls out idling with all plugs in, but when i pull number 3 it idles like it's hardly noticeable that only three of four are firing.
why would it run smoother on 3 plug wires than with all?
i checked the distributor cap and rotor, both seem solid, as do all the wires running from the coil to the cylinders through the distro.
is this timing belt slippage?
thanks guys.
jonathan
