AW70 71 slipping badly 200

On a 1990 240, the AW70 was slipping badly, once it had warmed up. I figured the clutches were gone, so I replaced it with a junkyard AW71 with a reported 120K miles on it. The 71 also slips, again after 5 or 10 minute’s worth of driving. The slipping on the 71 is intermittent—sometimes it slips so badly that the car can’t climb moderate grades without losing speed, and other times it doesn’t slip at all. Clutches can't be intermittent, but beyond that, I'm already past my ignorance barrier.
Any ideas or solutions would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Jake
