erratic fuel guage 900

When the tank is full, the gauge reads correctly, and drops appropriately to about 1/2 mark. But from there to a dry tank it's anybody's guess: it will rise almost to full mark, you can see it actually move, then it will drop just as quickly. It might go below the 1/2 mark and heads towards 0, then head back towards 1/2. It basically has a mind of its own in the lower 1/2 of the tank.

Is the float stuck or is there some other known likely suspect cause?
