740GLE Quit At Speed, Then Came Back 700 1987

This afternoon our '87 740 quit 3 times at 50mph about a half mile from home on a cold startup. It quit for about 2 sec then came back. The auto never disengaged so kept the engine turning. About 5 sec later did it again. Noticed the tach drop to zero then back up when engine caught again. No sputter, just off for a few sec then back on solid. The third time I said, uh, no, we're going back for my car (240). I turned around and headed back home and it never did it again the mile drive back home. Engine never reached op temp, outside temp about 28 deg, garage temp about 50 deg. Suspect main relay that energizes the engine bay since the tach stopped, too. Never did it before. We drove 400 miles roundtrip to Estes Park from southern CO Mon-Wed, no problems w/car at all. Puzzling. Yes, it's within the years of the bad OEM engine harness. Dearly hope that's not it. Anyone have an experience like this? No fuses popped that I can see. Ignition switch? I will do some more detective work tomorrow after church.
