1993 940 turbo knocking 900 1993

My 1993 940 Turbo is currently running a low stock boost pressure of 5.5-6 psi for some reason. After installing a MBC, i raised the boost to 7-8psi. Thus resulting in massive knocking even on premium gas. In city fuel economy is at 15-16 driving conservatively. I dont know if the two are connected though. Knock sensor is at 9 o'clock position. I hear that it is supposed to be at 6 o'clock position. Also has leak in head gasket near front piston on passenger side. Thinking of getting head resurfacing and valve job. Would this help? Why is it knocking at basically stock boost of 7.5psi when raised?
