can't find correct timing sequence! 900 1993

help! can't seem to find correct timing sequence on '93 960 wagon...old timing belt frayed, but not broken, found engine to be out of sync w/ any diagrams and instructions i currently possess. have tried all i know without doin damage to the old girl, to no avail. seems crank and cam pulleys are out of sync, and according to the volvo manual, if i put everything back as instructed, i can't even make one revolution by hand w/o feelin some resistance. i have heard after a "professional" rebuild, this is quite common, as they don't index the crank, or cam pulleys correctly. as long as it runs, they send u on ur way,. and that's that...any advice or tutoring gladly accepted! thx.
