Can issue with spark plugs cause hesitation and misfire or backfire during cold start? 200 1983

I have an 83 244 with a B23 which I've owned for about a year. Previously it would hesitate when accelerating from a complete stop. As the gas was depressed farther, the car would slowly respond and wind up to a normal RPM. The problem seemed most severe when the car was cold.

After some reading, I decided to clean the throttle body and figured I'd replace the distibutor cap, rotor, plugs and air filter while I was at it.

So, I replaced the cap, rotor and air filter and cleaned the throttle body. I didn't initially replace the plugs because I didn't have the right plug socket.

Anyway, the car ran great with no hesitation at each acceleration. The car took off from a stop like it never had before. However, it did misfire or backfire once and stall and had never done so previously.

Then I changed the plugs and since then, it hesitates again when I accelerate from a complete stop, but now it winds up and lurches ahead as if pressure is building up. It has also misfired or backfired pretty regularly when it's cold. Recently, the backfire forced the hose off the air mass meter.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. I can't help but think that somehow I may have improperly installed the plugs or damaged the plus wires during installation. I had to screw off the metal caps on the top of the plug, exposing the threads to match the ones I removed.

Thanks, in advance.
