fuel pump intermitant 740 Turbo 700

Had the car quit on the highway. Couldn't hear the pump start when turning on the ignition for a re-start. Have spark, swopped FI relay, same. Swopped Radio suppression relay, same. Then after a day of sitting I heard the fuel pump prime and it started. Drove 50 yards, it cut out, no fuel pump prime up again. I ran out of time then so haven't checked for power at the pump yet, but does anyone know if pumps can be intermitant when dying? I always believed that they go or are dead.
Thanks for any suggestions.
Ian
