Codes? 900 1996

Your 96 is an OBDII car right? (you read the codes with a scanner vs. with the DTC under the hood). I'm having trouble finding those codes 456 & 543 for either an OBD1 or OBDII vehicle.

The solenoids in the trans are relatively easy to replace and cost ~$115 each. If you know which solenoid is having the problem, I would certainly do that before replacing the trans. I would also switch to synthetic atf if you haven't already. When was the last time the trans had the fluid changed?
