740 conks out then restarts okay - ideas? 700

My 1976 740 gle has has been very reliable (213000 miles). A few years back it wouldn't start on a hot day. (I think it was fuel pump relay but actually I've forgotten since fixing the problem). Anyway, here near Washington DC the temperature just got cold. On Wed. I put in 6 gallons of gas after running tank very low. I drove a few miles once or twice. Parked car for the night. No problems . Then on Thursday morning the temperature dropped to the 20s, I think. So, Thursday morning I drop my kid at school after driving half a mile. While stopped, the car conked out. No sputter - just engine stopped running. The dash lights remain on. So just the engine "died". Later that day I started the car and drove half a mile, then it died with an "instant off" feel. Felt like someone pulled the wire off the coil ( I check and it is intact). No sputter. I immediately restarted and drove one block. It died. I started and drove another block. It died. Then I drove a few blocks, mailed a letter and made it it home (half mile) with one more "quick off". It has been wet a snowy here I so I have not done any real checking so far. Appreciate any ideas. I also own a 1995 940. Can I switch the fuel pump relays between the two cars? Anyway, I am going to drive the car again - near the house - just to get more info. I don't really know if this is related to cold, or bad gas or what. By the way, I have been toying with the idea of selling this car and had just decided to sell it - you don't think the car sensed this and is retaliating?
