Help! 200 1989

Help! This morning while I was starting my car it made this really strange grinding noise, but still started. It did this throughout the day, and my mechanic said that it was (based on the noise I described) the crank speed sensor. So, I replaced the old one with a new one, and when I went to start it I heard a whirring noise (the starter motor), but it didn't start. What did I do?! I checked all the fuses, and installed the old speed sensor, thinking that at least that way it would run...Thanks for any responses.
