Rear wheel bearings 700 1992

On my 745 I have play in the rear wheel bearings. Not so much that I can see the wheel move up and down while gripping it at the 12 and 6 oclock positions though. I notice a slight noise from the rt rear bearing...Question, Can I get away with repacking the bearings only and living with the play? Has anyone actually had an axle come out as warned in the FAQ? I assume that would take some serious looseness though..This is my 2nd car and I don't think I will drive it more than 7k miles a year..

Thanks in advance for any help provided
