Joel, my newly purchased 89 245 wagon with 127k gets the same poor mileage in Austin, TX. So far I have installed:
new plugs, rotor, cap, replaced flame trap and hoses, installed new fuel pressure regulator (last one was leaking from the seam where the two canister pieces join), new thermostat (original still worked ok, but...), and was ready (I have a weird hesitation issue) to install a new fuel pump check valve when I discovered the current fuel pump is not the original Bosch, therefore the check valve I bought is for a pump of which vintage I do not know. All the paint markings are gone. I have removed and cleaned the throttle body. I've run injector cleaner through a full tank of gas.
I still get 16-18 mph mixed hwy/city but darn it if it doesn't run smoother! This is unacceptable. Next up is cleaning AMM, then I'm not sure where to go. Hope this makes you feel better, or worse. I may just sell it at this point.
Dave Shannon: I too lived in Durango for 14 years. I swear I know you. Can't think of exactly where from. Drop me a line. Interested in a nice wagon that will probably get 25 mpg if it moves "home" to D-town?
