blown head gasket?? (was coolant loss) S90-V90

On my 97 960 wagon, 162k I had recently posted a message that I was losing coolant at the cap due boilovers once the car was stopped. After two trips to the dealer (borton in minneapolis) where the first diagnosis was a leak at the reservoir overflow, the second was a leak at the bottom of the reservoir. Now they come back with today it is a bad head gasket. Estimate is $2k!!!While I've heard this can be a symptom of air in the coolant system, I was just floored when it switched from a couple of leaky hoses to now a bad head gasket. What are the long term hazards to my engine if I just drive it and keep adding coolant (with the cap loose) while I figure out what to do. Anybody got any recommendations for a reasonable mechanic and cost estimate for this job. thanks
