Brakes not braking 200

I've had trouble with mushy brakes for a few years now. Bleeding didn't help, so I just kinda ignored it. The car braked fine, the pedal was just closer to the floor.

So, last week, when replacing a wheel bearing, we noticed the brake pads were separating from the backing plate. Got new ones, then discovered the calipers, pads, and pins were all pretty much a rusted solid unit. Actually bent a brake pad backing plate trying to get it out, it was so stuck. Managed to get it apart, piston is leaking. Ordered new calipers, filed off enough rust to get it back together with the new pads. I discover the brakes are now working much better, so maybe the old problem was that my front brakes were so rusted they weren't working at all.

So last night, calipers come in, everything gets put on, brakes get bled. I jump in the car to pump up the brakes. After several pumps (car turned off), they still feel mushy--no pressure building. So, the car goes back up on the lift, nothing is leaking, and the brakes stop the front wheels when they are spun up in the air. An attempted test drive by BF was quickly aborted, as he says there are no brakes at all (I didn't try, I'll take his word)

So, brake booster? Brake pressure doesn't build with car off. BF says he hears fluid in the booster and believes the diaphragm is shot. Does this all sound reasonable? We're going to grab the brake booster off my parts car at my parents house this weekend. Anything else that it could be?

Also, the two calipers (no-name, rebuilt) were identical. ABS, so only 1 bleeder screw on each, so its at the top on one, bottom on the other. Is this right? (yes, we should have checked the ones that came off, but they went back for the core charge before I thought to check).

I beginning to agree that my volvo really does hate my BF. He generously offered to replace the wheel bearing, which then turned into brake pads (I've done them before, should be easy-not on this car), then calipers, now a brake booster. He says he's never touching it again after he fixes the brakes. So should a brake booster fix it, or is there anything else?

Thanks!! (sorry this was so long)
