automatic transmission reverse mystery 200

i just bought a 89 240 wagon with mystery miles (200+?) for my daughter. runs like a top and goes forward and backwards no problem. until it gets hot. once the transmission is warmed up, it doesn't want to go in reverse. in fact, it even will go a little forward, sometimes. it will also creep in neutral (occasionally -and only when hot). when it does go backwards, it makes some awful grinding thudding noises and goes slowly, as if against resistance.
the fluid is brown, so i already plan to change it. is it possible that will be the fix? or should i save my effort and just replace the whole transmission?
thanks,
sasha
