Need help, Alt/volt regulator question...... 700 1986

This is a new one on me, working on a friends 86 745 GLE n/a. It needs the voltage reg changed, thought I could just pop in a spare I have on hand but in all my years and Volvos that have passed thru my hands I have never seen a regulator like this one, it has a 2 prong plug that an external connector plugs into.. Can a plugless regulator replace this or does it need to have this connection point. Not sure what the wires control or run to as I say I've never seen a Regulator like this before. I did replace it with a plugless one and the car starts and no trouble lights come on in the dash like when your reg is going bad... Just wondering if it needs the correct one installed or not, can the connector remain disconnected and properly charge or not..... TIA Tom 27940aholic Of course it's a Bosch, P/N 1197311800 below the P/N it says, EL 14V 4C
