Very good to hear it all worked out, George!

Indeed... a generator (or any engine) near the house must have the exhaust appropriately routed. Our generator is sort of below our house... but about 30 feet from our front door. And to make it in the front door, it has to make a 180° U-turn. But sure enough, if the front door is open, I can smell the exhaust inside.

I'm surprised that the furnace didn't like the 'dirty' power from the generator.. that should offer pure sine current. Perhaps you should get out your multimeter and find out just what it's offering in both voltage, cycles/second.. and consistancy. Maybe it's running just a tad too fast or slow... would be nice to have that sorted out for next time.
