Rear Axle Interchangeablity 200 1977

I have a question about the rear axle on 240's. Did the design change during the 1975-93 production run? Can different model years be fitted without welding?

I have a 1977 264, the original axle seems to be slipping and needs to be replaced. When I had the Borg Warner automatic, it would always slam into gear and I think that this loosened it up. Today, with the m46, I get unpleasant vibrations on acceleration in first gear.

Which model years do you recommend for fitting with a 1983 B23F with M46, in the 77' chassis?
