Need help, Alt/volt regulator question...... 700 1986

Called my friends foreign auto parts store this am and he said the p/n i had had been superceded by the later plugless regulator. I put in a good used one i had but it was not charging, found that one connection point at the top of the regulator, think it's the ground point, had a little rust on it. I scraped it off clean, reinstalled it, started the car and the voltage guage on the dash jumped right up to the halfway point, i checked voltage at he battery which was now showing 14.49 volts. Previously read 11.53. My friends car is now back up and running....... Thanks all...... Tom 27940aholic.. May be picking up a 92 944 n/a w/115k on it if anyone is interested....
