When I do the head gasket...

I did the head gasket on my 940 back in June. I had to send the head to a machine shop because it was corroded around most of the water passages.
I bought the Volvo VRS kit which contained a head gasket (incidentally made by Elring) and all the seals needed to recondition the head EXCEPT for the front oil seal which I thought was a strange oversight.
At the same time I replaced the timing belt & tensioner, water pump (it was leaking), front oil seals, inlet & exhaust manifold gaskets, coolant, oil & filter, cleaned the flame trap & oil separator, cleaned the tops of the pistons and generally cleaned areas that are hard to get at with the engine in one piece. I didn't replace the thermostat as it was fairly new.
I definitely recommend having a shop look at the head as you don't want to do this job twice.

Hope this helps
