Weird new noise... Transmission? 200 1984

I've got a weird new noise troubling me with my '84 245DL. Seems that in the last few weeks, it has been making a low rumbling sound when I accelerate from a stop or climb a steep hill in 1st or 2nd gear. As best as I can tell, it doesn't matter if I'm driving straight or through a turn, or over smooth or bumpy roads - only when I have it in gear at low speeds usually under a load am I able to hear it. This evening, driving up a very steep hill, I heard it at its worst.

So I fear that this may be the transmission (4spd w/ OD). Is this a symptom of a worn clutch or a dry transmission or ???
