Dead 960 Advice 900 1993

My wife's 93 965 w/ 250k died. The mechanic says they are "2 valves stuck in the #5 piston) However, the timing belt DID NOT BREAK. What could have caused this? It had been having increasingly loud lifter noise for some time. She overheated it last fall (broken upper rad tube) but it didn't seem like anything bad happened then. The car has otherwise been maintained in top condition, new shocks, struts, poly, strut mounts, calipers, rotors, 2 sets wheels w/ blizzacks, radiator, A/C compressor R/D, condenser, alternator, etc.

My wife LOVES this car. Am I crazy to put an engine in it? I also might convince her to get a 964 and I would strip all good parts from the 965 for future use. What years should be reasonably compatable with a late model year 93 (I have already had some issues with it needing parts that are supposed to be for a 94)

Advice?
