vinyl tear on seat - easiest practical fix?

Hi bricksters,

My trusty '88 now has a 3" rip in the vinyl on the driver's seat. I have read some about vinyl repair, but most of the sources I've seen are interested primarily in aesthetics, and I don't care much about how it looks. I just want to protect the seat from splitting further, and provide a reasonably smooth and flat place to sit (right now the corner of the separated vinyl pokes out).

I would like to avoid removing the seat cover, but neither do I like the idea of wrapping the seat in duct tape. If I'm just hosed and I need to do the good repair, I can hear that.

I welcome your easy DIY suggestions. Thank you.
