1992 245 ROUGH running sputter, backfire pops, but smooth at constant speed 200

Hi everyone,

It's me again. I just can't figure this one out.
Background: 186K, very well maintained since new. I got an error code for mass airflow and O2 sensor last week. Both replaced now and no error codes.

The car runs terrible. Idles very rough, stumbles, misses, pops, you name it. Acceleration is almost impossible, the same pops, stumble, etc. Once the car finally gets up to constant speed it runs perfectly smooth. Any increase in throtle (even a tiny bit) at any speed makes the car pop, spit, and stumble again.

Checked for a vacuum leak, none found - vacuum gauge reading normal but does jump around since the car is idling so rough.
Fuel pressure reg checks ok. Timing ok. New plugs and wires not too long ago.

Everything started when the mass airflow went and it acts like this part is still bad. Could a new re-manfactured one be bad but not give a error code?

Any ideas will be much appreciated.
Jim
