rear brake pads, retaining pins, I'm dumb 200 1987

Hi all, I'm doing my first brake pad replacement on the rear brakes of my '87 240 wagon. Its all going well, except I've run into one problem that I can't get past. I got the new pads in fine and I got the retaining pins started with the spring clip in place, I just can't figure out how to get the leverage to give those pins the last little push that they need. The rear springs prevent me from giving the pins a good solid whack with a hammer to finish the job. How do you all do it?? there must be some technique I've not been clever enough to figure out.
Thanks,
Colin
