740 Alignment Problem 700 1989

Camber and caster don't usually go out of spec on 740s, though they may well be somewhat different side to side, which can cause a slight pull, or the steering to feel different from side to side. I once had a wagon that had been flogged mercilessly on bumpy dirt roads for many thousands of miles, and after replacing worn out bushings etc., it aligned OK.

Were all the replacement bushings identical from side to side? If not, that can cause problems.

Did you replace the ball joints when you did everything else? I once had a problem on a 145, when I replaced the ball joints with cheapo Asian parts. The shop could not get it to align correctly, in two or three tries, and it pulled and wandered all over the place. A year, and 10K miles, later, the cheap ball joints had become dangerously worn, and I replaced them with expensive ones from a Volvo dealer, then took the car in for alignment. It was transformed--steered perfectly, and tracked dead straight. These ball joints lasted for several years, withstanding considerable hard use, before the car got wrecked and parted out. On the other hand, I currently have IPD ball joints on my 88 740, and they seem to be OK so far, after 18 months and about 25K miles.

What is the condition of your tires, particularly the fronts? If they are worn unevenly, that can cause a pull to one side. If they are slighty different in diameter (due to uneven wear) it can sometimes cause the alignment to be done incorrectly, depending on what kind of machine is used.
