engine mounts failure mode 200 1989

Good detail re. the crank position sensor.

IMHO, the starting failure mode re. engine mounts is - -
Engine mount(s) fails, causing engine + tranny to sit in abnormal position.
Shift mechanism is moved out of it's normal position.

Thus when shift lever is in "P" or "N" for the relocated tranny, the neutral safety switch located in the shift lever housing is not activated as it normally would be. Result is that starter motor is not permitted to turn when key is put in "start" position.

In this scenario it's possible for someone to correctly diagnose a misadjusted neutral safety switch. Adjusting it will let the car start but the mounts are still bad which will cause engine vibration and other possible issues. Since the oil filter is located immediately above the passenger side motor mount, failure of that mount can eventually lead to a broken filter + oil leak which is not good. Not immediately, but it can happen. (filter now carrying weight of engine will rest on mount base)
