steering without power: could it damage the rack?

My wife and kids have a new game: turn off the car ('88 245) at the top of the driveway, then coast into the parking area. It's supposed to save gas, since we have to get out of the car to open our gate (deer problems, another story). Anyway, there's just one big turn to get into the parking spot.

Conincidentally, the steering got weird and we now need a new rack (diagnosed by a mechanic I trust). Any chance the game could have messed with the rack, or power steering?

I'm also in the market for a rebuilt rack and would appreciate any advice.
