Episodic no start: battery or alternator? 200 1989

Here's what's happened. One day I got in and it wouldn't turn over. I waited a few minuts and then it turned over and started. No problems for about a week. Then it did the same thing, except it wouldn't turn over. Then I got someone to jump the car with cables and it started right up and it and it has started right up a few times since.
In any event something seems wrong.
My test? When I rev the engine the lights don't dim of brighten so that makes me think the alternator is malfunctioning in some way, and the battery is not being charged.
I do have a multimeter, but certainly am not totally versed with it's uses.
Can anyone please help with some diagnostics on my episodic no starts.
Thanks, and Merry Christmas.
