Coil rubbing against tire--anyone know what causes this?? 200 1987

Hello everyone! About a week ago, I posted a question about a burning rubber smell, and I finally have figured out the cause. The front drivers side tire well has a large spring coil that is rubbing up against my tire! I compared the coil to the passenger side, and I know that something is seriously wrong with this car. I paid only $1600 for the car (I needed a cheap, but good car) and I'm absolutely sick thinking about what an expensive fix this might be. Can anyone offer any advice to what this type of problem is, or what needs to be done to fix it? I want to sound as informed as possible when I take it to a mechanic. If it is too costly to fix, I may not be able to afford to have it fixed. Thanks!
