what does Power Stage do? where is it mounted ? 700 1988

1988 740 wagon -
What does teh part called Power Stage do?
Where is it mounted?
Can it have intermittent failure or is is all or nothing?

Our 88 740 wagon has died on the road twice. First time, after sitting 30 minutes or so it started again. Drove for some two months. It died again yestarday, got towed to shop. They were fault tracing, found it had no spark. A little while into fault tracing it all started to work again. Starts and runs fine now. They are suspecting the Power Stage. I (obviously) am not so certain, hence the questions.
