cruise control problems 900 1993

Hello,
The cruise control on my 93 945T no longer works. I can feel the pedal drop a bit like there is some vacuum pulling on the throttle, but it is not enough to maintain speed, and after a few seconds, the vacuum is not strong enough to move the pedal at all. Having read the FAQ, it sounds like it might be the vacuum pump assembly. Are there other causes? I have checked the condition of the hoses and joints under the hood and they look OK. Can I activate the pump by running a wire from the battery to test? It has three terminals - I don't want to fry it.

Thanks,
Steve
