Knock sensor?1990 745TI (141,000) 700

Piston slap is a result of piston skirt to cylinder wall clearance. It really doesn't have to be excessive to slap. Later red blocks had piston coolers (squirters) and are reportedly quieter. It is nick-named the "Tractor Motor" probably for that reason!

To ease your mind a little my '87 turbo has slapped since I rebuilt it 10 years ago (with used pistons) and now has 481,000 miles (not kilometers)

I fully expect mine to see the half million mile mark! Then I might think about a later engine.
