climate control unit 700 1988

On the way to removing the frozen steering lock on our 1988 volvo 760, our mechanic noticed that the knob that controls the fan just spins around and does not change the fan speed. I told him I accidently broke it trying to change the speed. It has been stuck in a position at about mid speed and still heats and defrosts at a semi-acceptable level. Any way now that all of the housing from the steering column, steering wheel, turn signals, dash etc are all over, I can see that the post that the knob was attached to is broken right off. The dealer said I need a new (or used) climate control unit, new is $800, Does any body know if it is possible to repair that post? The rest of it works fine. Or how about some alternative sources for used or new parts. I did look at the FCP Groton site but I did not see any such part listed.
Thanks,
I am Silverstreak
