Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor 90 740 700 1990

Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor 90 740
I have been getting a code in OBD for engine coolant temp sensor.
At first the engine seemed to be running rich with an idle a bit above normal.
Never any trouble to start.
I began by changing the sensor.
The engine coolant temp sensor code remained in OBD.
Once it was changed I noticed a difference in the way the engine ran.
No more high idle. But it would stall easily within the first few minutes when cold.
More investigation revealed a bad ground strap to the intake manifold.
Repairing this has had no noticable impact.
Code remains. Cannot clear even if battery is dissconected.
Spade terminals on sensor are OK.
Question: Is it possible the code is clearing but reappearing right away?
Either way, how to I safely check the wiring harness without risk to either ECU?
(code is reported by both ignition and fuel injection ECU's)
