1991 radio

O.K. this is what I am experiencing. My radio runs fine and then after about 5 minutes I experience extreme distortion and static. I jiggle, or tap the radio and if I am lucky it stops for another minute or 2. I presume that the radio is toast. What about the amplifier? My son has an 1989 240 that his former girlfriend bought him a Sony cd player/radio for. He said I could have it so I took his sony out of his 89 and the radio out of my 1991 thinking I could just trade them out. It doesn't appear to be that simple. The harnees from my radio is different from the harness of my son's sony. What is up with that 6-pin circular connector? does the Sony ned the car's amplifier? are there any gorilla instructions that I could us to do this?
Ideas anyone?
